"Success For Every Student"

School News
SUBLIMITY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Message From School Superintendent,
Dr. Jack Adams

I have been a part of the North Santiam School District since July 2006. One of my desires in taking the position as School Superintendent was to provide a safe warm environment for students to learn. One of the ways you can help join me in my quest to provide a better learning environment for our students is to become a better informed patron of the North Santiam School District.

In looking forward to the November 4, 2008 election, I would like to ask you as a community to take a moment and think about this…

The children of the North Santiam School District are in desperate need of new facilities. These facilities are crucial to the educational success of each student. One of the first things I noticed when I came to the District is that students are forced to miss valuable classroom time because they have to eat lunches in shifts. They are forced to eat their lunches on steps, in hallways and gymnasiums. The District has one full service kitchen.

Overcrowded classrooms with as many as 35 students affects learning, period. The District has 22 classrooms located in modular buildings. Today, four of five schools in the North Santiam School District are already over capacity. The projected growth rate for the North Santiam School District equals more than one classroom per year or 320 students over the next 10 years.

The North Santiam School District does not just serve children that attend our public schools, but provides services to the private schools and home schooled children as well. Those services include: special education, special programs, transportation, building usage, playground usage and lunch programs, to name a few.

We have put over $6 million into our old buildings over the last eight years. However, our buildings are too old to house the necessary wiring needed to keep up with technology. We need to provide up-to-date opportunities for all children in our District who will someday be competing in the work force and college using technology that they haven’t even been exposed to yet.

Best Regards,

Dr. Jack Adams

Superintendent, North Santiam School District

Message from School Board Chair,
Tass Morrison

Hello Sublimity School Community,

Please exercise your right to vote on or before November 4. Thank you to all of you who are helping with the bond campaign: “Better Schools for Great Kids”. It is extremely gratifying knowing that so many of you are advocating on behalf of improving our aging schools. It definitely exemplifies the WILDCATS vision:

WILD +

C – Caring

A – Attitudes +

T – Teamwork =

S – Success

The state report cards have now been distributed and I am pleased that, district-wide, we continue to see higher numbers in student attendance and lower numbers in our student drop-out statistics. Sublimity got a “Strong” rating because of good scores across all the variables and your current goals reflect the desire to continue a trend of improvement. I applaud the hard work you are undertaking in the academic areas.

Please contact me for conversations about any issue you may have about the North Santiam School District. You can reach me at tandtmor@wvi.com; or 503.767.1190.

Happy Halloween!

Sublimity S.T.A.R.s

Sublimity is starting a new reading incentive program to encourage students to become S.T.A.R.s (Sublimity’s Top Achieving Readers). S.T.A.R.s are students who read above and beyond their homework expectations. They immerse themselves into books for the simple love of reading. Each grade level will have a minimum number of minutes to read every month. All of the students that meet or surpass their goal will receive an award and have a star with their name on it displayed on a bulletin board in the main hallway. The top reader in every class will receive a special certificate at the Wildcat Pride assemblies. We are looking forward to recognizing all our great readers and encouraging a school-wide love of reading!

NSSD Science Achievements

The North Santiam School District would like to recognize the outstanding achievements of the district’s science departments. The science department had the largest growth area in the district’s report card. The science standards were raised and the scores proved it worked! The district’s science scores were above the state average at Stayton High School and our Middle Schools are following up with the same standards for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. The use of science labs that were updated over the last two years with a grant received by the district has helped to drive the department to higher successes.

Also, the district would like to welcome Lars Schindler, 6th, 7th and 8th grade Science Teacher at Sublimity Middle School. Lars is a Master Teacher of Science and is also certified in Reading Literacy as well. The district is excited about our science curriculum and is thankful to have quality educators like Lars.

PTC Report

Can you believe that we’re heading into the holiday season with the start of November? Crazy, crazy! It seems like school just started two weeks ago…not months.

I want to remind everyone that your Parent Teacher Club has a suggestion/comment box by each school’s office. We just implemented this and we’ve had some great suggestions and comments. We would love to hear your comments on the new Book Fair we had during parent/teacher conferences. Would you like to use Usborne Books again? What did you think of the selection? Would you prefer to go back to Scholastic? Also, what do you think of a buy-a-brick program for our new reader board. Would you be willing to spend $50, $75 or maybe even $100 for a brick to be engraved with your families name and used for the masonry work that will encase the reader board? These comments would really help us make decisions on future activities and are a perfect way to have your thoughts heard if you aren’t always able to make it to the Parent Teacher Club meetings.

In other business, we voted at the last meeting to discontinue the scrip program and concentrate on the e-scrip program. We do, however, have some local scrip that we have already purchased that we need to liquidate, such as Figaro’s, McDonalds, A&W, Ugo’s, Big Town Hero, ect. To purchase these, please contact Heather in the middle school office @ 769-7282. Look for more information on the e-scrip program in this newsletter. We also decided to do another Dinner Auction and had Brian and Carrie Corcoran step up to help chair it this year. We are looking for a few more people to help make a steering committee. And lastly, we put together a by-law committee and they will be looking at amending our by-laws. Thanks to Lisa Smith for volunteering to chair this committee. We would also like to thank Jim Kingsbury and Nancy Stuckart for getting the info and working on the Buy-a-Brick program we may be implementing.

Our next meeting is this Monday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the library with a meet and greet and refreshments at 6:30. Thanks to Jamie McCarty who will be providing the refreshments.

Need a Computer?

Thanks to the MAR (Microsoft Authorized Refurbish) Program, the NSSD is able to refurbish and sell computers to families that have students in the school district. For $25 you get a CPU pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows 2000 and Open Office, monitor, keyboard and mouse. It makes a great Christmas gift! Buy yours now while supplies last! Sale ends December 15, 2008. To purchase your computer, please contact the NSSD Technology Department at 503-769-6924. Hurry supplies are limited!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Sublimity's Parent/Teacher Conferences were a huge success! Sublimity School’s goal is 100% attendance. This takes a team effort from our parents and staff to make this goal a reality. We were very close to achieving that goal. We now all know that a 100% attendance is attainable.

Our elementary was up from 98% attendance rate last year to an unbelievable 100% this year! PERFECT!! This was a great accomplishment!

Our Middle School Staff and Parents were up from 61% attendance rate last year in the fall to 88% this year. What a success!! Our school goal of 100% was very close to being met. Thank you again for your efforts. We had conversations with 95% of our parents in a three-day period.

Let the State Testing Begin!

Sublimity School has just begun our first round of OAKS (Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) state testing in third through eighth grades. Students complete these tests on-line and we receive immediate results. This allows our teachers to use the data to individualize instruction for each student.

Please help your son or daughter be prepared for the test by making sure they get adequate sleep each night, and eat a good breakfast in the morning. We will be asking for donations of healthy snacks and water to hand out during the testing process for each class. Send your child off to school with confidence-building words of praise and encouragement…”You’ll do great!” “Believe in yourself!” Thank you in advance for your support!

Season's Greetings

This year's music holiday program will be featuring all of the music classes in grades 3-8. The genre of the program will be traditional holiday music. In the past we have featured the K-2 music classes for the holiday program. The K-2 Primary Music Classes will be featured in a Spring Program this year.

There is no admission charge for the Season's Greetings holiday program. Both performances will be in the gym.

Monday, Dec. 8th 1:00pm MATINEE PERFORMANCE

Tuesday, Dec. 9th 7:00pm EVENING PERFORMANCE

There will be 3 instrumental ensembles featured at the beginning of the program. The instrumental groups performing will be the 5th Grade Band, the 6th Grade Instrumental Ensemble and the 7th and 8th Grade Symphonic Band. These instrumental groups have the most technical music to prepare and are working very hard. All of the instrumental groups are very strong this year. They are such talented and enthusiastic musicians.

The General Music Classes in grades 3-6 will combine together for the performance. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade choir (Sublimity Showstoppers) will also be combined with the General Music Classes in this chorale presentation. This vocal presentation will be about 150 voices strong and the choral literature for the program is very exciting.

The maintenance staff, with help from the 6th graders, do an excellent job setting up for rehearsals and performances. They should be commended for all their efforts that help our Sublimity musicians to perform their best.

Many of the 6th-8th grade music students will be involved in supportive roles for this holiday program. It is very fortunate our middle school students are so responsible and willing to help with the technical and visual aspects of the holiday program.

The teaching staff, classified staff, parents and administration also are involved with support, supervision and encouragement. It's such a team effort when we do a music program at Sublimity School. It's one of the reasons we have such delightful programs here at our school.

Bring family and friends to enjoy this joyful holiday presentation of Season's Greetings!!! This performance of our talented Sublimity students is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit!!!!

Awesome Kids!

We have created a new award this year for those students who demonstrate leadership, responsibility, and kindness that goes above and beyond our normal expectations. The teacher writes up the certificate and delivers it to Mr. McCarty and Mrs. Riesterer to review. They call the parents of the student who received the award to share the great news! The award is then displayed for the month in our school, and then goes home to keep! It’s a really great program, and it’s a lot of fun getting to call parents with some really good news! The recipients of the first Awesome Kid Awards in September are:

Vanden Young – KG

Keven Rabadah – 5th

Julie Wallace – 7th
